1950's Alcohol Awareness
I came across this 1950s alcohol awareness advertisement which surprisingly highlights the same problems we are experiencing today. I found this a little uncanny - it's as if we've been living in a time warp over the last 50 years! The ad reminded me of the Britney Spears fiasco (see embedded video below) currently on the news where young rich people are often involved with alcohol/drugs and how this infiltrates into their peer group resulting in risky behaviour such as drunk-driving etc.
You'll notice that the main message of this 1950s ad is about not selling liquor to minors - in this case under 21 years since it's in the US. This is similar to our laws here except that for us the age limit is three years younger. I'm not sure how others feel about these restrictions but it's interesting coming from a culture that is quite relaxed about alcohol - it's never locked up, always offered at special occasions (and often at not so special occasions!), and children are able to have a sip of alcohol virtually anytime. This is, of course, provided in a controlled and supportive environment with family and friends overseeing and guiding consumption. In fact, there is mounting evidence showing that this type of supportive environment actually counters alcohol abuse in the longterm.
I think labelling alcohol as 'tabu' from a young age actually increases interest - the more you can't have something, the more you want it! It would be interesting to hear about other peoples thoughts about absolute prohibition of alcohol among minors, or whether a supportive, controlled environment to consume alcohol is the way to go?????

Hi Michelle, it's funny that alcohol appears to be a consistent problem.
I agress with you, i don't think that banning alcohol from young people is going to make a dramatic difference.
It would be interesting to find a study that examines whether there is a correlation between alcohol abuse and the age at which we begin drinking.
I would think that alcohol abuse is a form of escape for some people. My (non-professional) opinion is that people who have problems with alcohol are usually using the substance to avoid an alternative problem...i don't think it has anything to do with age.
INTERESTING!! Amanda :)
Hi Karen,
I found your post and the video very interesting. When I was 15 or so I had a good friend who at the time i didn't realise had a problem with alcohol. She lived with many family problems and consequently drank. I feel ignorant in retrospect as I wasn't aware, although I was only young too. Her father was an alcoholic and used to hide (from his wife/my friends mother) bottles of spirits around the house. My friend used to find these bottles and take them, but although her father knew what she was doing he kept quite because he didn't want to admit his behaviour either. Unfortunately my friends and I never took the issue seriously as whenever we tried to intervene it would cause more harm than good. Unfortunately my friend still drinks quite heavily, but it is more in comparison with many younger adults in today's society. Even though binge drinking is bad many people still participate in this type of behaviour and I am not going to lie, I also do on occasions. I think the effects of alcohol need to be greater publicised as drinking can get out of control for many people for many different reasons. I once heard that the younger a person tries alcohol the higher chance they will become alcohol abusers however this also brings other problems such as the idea of "forbidden fruit". Interesting area with many complications. This has really got me thinking about other alcohol related issues - I may even blog about it...I'll keep you posted.
Thanks.
Hi Karen,
Firstly let me say how excited (and a little frightened!) I am to see an alcohol pump in Brazil. Hopefully after successfully completing my degree i'm heading off to South America for 2 months at the start of next year and will be spending a few weeks in Brazil so I will be sure to check out how these things work!
My thoughts on alcohol use and minors is that providing a controlled environment for minors to drink in is both a good and bad thing. Firstly it will hopefully encourage responsible consumption of alcohol, although this is unlikely in my experience as teenagers are going to be teenagers and as soon as they get the opportunity to cut loose they will! But it also encourages the consumption of alcohol, which may in turn just lead to further consumption!
I grew up in a family were I was provided with safe environment to consume alcohol as a minor but that did not discourage me from getting a little silly whenever the opportunity presented itself!
I again agree that banning alcohol from young people won't make a massive difference and think that the use of scare tactics (images/ video footage of what can go wrong) may be more useful than simply banning alcohol. At the end of the day kids will be kids and try to do everything that they are told not to.
If you have any thoughts on whether leaders are born or made please check out my blog.
Cheers
Sam
Hi Karen,
It may not be too long before we see alcohol pumps is OZ, I believe they are ethanol based fuel pumps and could be used here one day!
So as excited as I would be about been able to get a drink whilst filling up in Brazil, I don't think it would do my health any good!
Cheers
